Summary
Meta-analysis of 45 effect sizes from 26 studies (N = 1,918) on how the number of encounters with a word during reading or listening relates to incidental vocabulary learning. The mean correlation is r = .34, a medium effect: repetition helps, but frequency of encounter explains only a modest share of what gets learned. Moderators included learner age, prior vocabulary knowledge, spacing of encounters, visual support, and engagement level. For Immersive this justifies the pipeline design of reading (many incidental encounters) feeding deliberate FSRS study (which closes the gap incidental exposure leaves), rather than relying on either alone.
